The Keighley and Worth Valley Railway Preservation Society has run heritage steam and diesel trains for over 50 years. The charity aims to preserve, maintain and operate the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway as a working museum of railway history for the education and enjoyment of present and future generations. The charity’s wholly-owned subsidiary, the Keighley and Worth Valley Light Railway Limited, is the organisation’s operating and commercial company.

Alongside our 700 volunteers, the Railway’s operating company, the Keighley and Worth Valley Light Railway Limited, employs a small team of paid staff to ensure consistent and high-quality delivery of our services and events.


Steam and Diesel Locomotive Fitter

The Keighley & Worth Valley Railway is looking for a skilled and enthusiastic mechanical engineer to join our locomotive department. This is a hands-on role working at the heart of a heritage railway, maintaining and restoring our fleet of steam and diesel locomotives alongside a dedicated team of staff and volunteers.

About the Role

You will play a key part in keeping our locomotives operational and historically authentic. Duties will include:

  • Carrying out skilled work in fitting, machining, fabrication, electrical systems and boiler repairs
  • Undertaking detailed locomotive restoration work
  • Working collaboratively with paid staff and volunteers across the locomotive department
  • Contributing to, and where appropriate leading, locomotive overhaul projects

About You

You’ll be a practical, safety-conscious engineer with experience working on steam and/or diesel locomotives, or in a closely related mechanical engineering environment. You’ll also be comfortable working as part of a mixed team of professionals and volunteers.

Location: Haworth
Salary: £32,500 per annum (£15.62 per hour), rising to £35,880 (£17.25 per hour) depending on experience
Contract: Permanent (subject to a 6-month probation period)
