Keighley, April 4, 2025 – Keighley Station has officially reopened following a comprehensive 18-month renovation project led by Network Rail, in collaboration with main contractor AMCO Giffen and the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway (KWVR). The transformation, made possible by a significant £10 million investment from Network Rail, was supported by over £500,000 in funding from the KWVR, backed by contributions from the Railway Heritage Trust and the Keighley Towns Fund.

At first glance, the station may appear unchanged, but this is a testament to the careful restoration of the Grade II-listed historic building. The project has focused on preserving the station’s original character while modernizing its infrastructure for future generations.

Key Renovations Undertaken by Network Rail:

  • Renewal of the station forecourt canopy glazing and refurbishment of metalwork.
  • Restoration of station frontage masonry, canopy, and drainage.
  • Replacement of timber above all platform ramps.
  • Extensive roof repairs across the station buildings, addressing issues such as dry rot.
  • Strengthening and reopening the western elevation link bridge for step-free access to Platform 4.
  • Masonry, guttering, and drainage repairs across station buildings and retaining walls.
  • Repairs to the Platform 1 waiting room.
  • Structural repairs and strengthening of footbridges over both Network Rail and KWVR lines.
  • Major structural work on the Old Parcels Office, including gable wall stabilization and chimney rebuilding.
  • Strengthening works to enable the full reopening of the forecourt to road vehicles.
  • Replacement of partition windows and frames between Platforms 2 and 3.

The Railway’s Investment and Contributions:

Recognizing the importance of the station’s revitalization, the KWVR undertook its own series of improvements, including:

  • Renewal of Platform 4 canopy glazing, a long-awaited project.
  • Repainting and repairs to the Platform 4 canopy supports and gutters.
  • Renovation of Keighley Water Tower into a visitor center.
  • Restoration of Keighley Signal Box, including timber and glazing repairs and a full repaint.
  • Replacement of window frames and windows on the Platform 4 ramp.
  • Reconstruction of the Platform 4 ramp, improving accessibility and maintenance access.
  • Extensive track repairs at ‘Keighley West Junction’ during the station closure.

A Collaborative Effort

KWVR temporarily closed Keighley Station for two months in early 2024 to facilitate the project. This strategic move minimized disruption and allowed for more efficient work execution. Additionally, AMCO Giffen utilized the KWVR land for site offices and storage to reduce the impact on the station’s car park.

With the completion of these transformative works, Keighley Station is now a welcoming and fully restored facility that both Network Rail and KWVR can take pride in. The station’s enhancements will benefit passengers, rail enthusiasts, and the wider Keighley community for years to come.
