Vintage Weekend
Step back in time across the weekend.
At the start of May over the Bank Holiday Weekend, the railway’s Vintage Trains will be in service using a selection from our collection of historic older coaches.
Many of these coaches date back to Victorian times and rarely see public use. These carriages form part of the Railway’s museum collection, including carriages from the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway Trust and the Vintage Carriages Trust.
Locomotives
Having originally been built for the Taff Vale Railway, 85 was sold by the Great Western Railway into colliery service in the North East before entering preservation by the KWVR in 1970.
Built for service in the Welsh Valleys north of Cardiff, no. 85 was deemed surplus to requirements at the time of the grouping in 1923 and was withdrawn by the Great Western Railway in 1927. In 1929, now numbered 426, it made the long journey north to the Durham coalfields, where it remained in service, as NCB no. 52, until 1968.
Salvation came in 1970 when 85 was bought by the KWVR and brought to Haworth for a new life on passenger services.
Built: 1899 Glasgow
As 52044 this engine became subject to one of the earliest private locomotive purchase schemes established in the country and was one of the earliest arrivals on the nascent KWVR.
Affectionately known as ‘The Green Dragon’ in ‘The Railway Children’ film, 957 was restored to working order at Haworth Yard and took its place in the delayed 50th-anniversary celebrations of The Railway Children in 2021.
Built: 1887 Beyer Peacock
Purchased by two pioneering members of the KWVR directly from British Railways, it arrived on the Worth Valley, where it was painted maroon and, along with USA Tank No. 30072, double-headed the “Re-opening Special” in June 1968.
When the engine arrived on the Worth Valley it was painted maroon and, along with USA Tank No. 30072, double-headed the “Re-opening Special” on 29th June 1968. Resplendent in its distinctive red livery, 41241 wrote itself into Worth Valley folklore on the Re-opening Special. Although coming to the end of steam on the national network, operating ex-BR locomotives in BR livery was forbidden. The choice of livery decided upon was the non-authentic, but appropriate crimson, reflecting its LMS lineage.
rolling stock
The Rolling Stock is expected to include carriages from The Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway Trust and The Vintages Carriages Trust. These are some of the oldest carriages on the railway, and gives a taste of the Golden Age of Travel.
The Old Gents Saloon
LNER saloon 21661, more famously known as the Old Gentleman’s Saloon in the Railway Children film, is arguably the oldest operational standard gauge passenger coach in the world and seats just 14 people.
279 6 Wheel 4 Compartment First
Built probably in 1880 at the L&Y Newton Heath works, after nearly 30 years of service the underframe was removed and body relocated to Valley Gardens, Hapton near Burnley, where initially from around 1910 it provided accomodation for newly-employed miners.
47 Blackpool Club Carriage
L&YR no. 47, this Blackpool Club Car was built in 1912 for the exclusive use of businessmen commuting between Blackpool and Manchester. It ended its working life in 1951, being sold for use as a cricket pavilion and then brought to the Railway by the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway Trust in 1993 where a full restoration was completed in 2011
1507 6 Wheel 5 Compartment Third

1474 Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway Brake Third
LYR 1474 Hughes taper-end Brake Third was built in 1910 at Newton Heath Works. Bogie Brake Third has five passenger compartments and a Guard and luggage compartment.
465 Metropolitan Railway Nine Compartment Third
This carriage and the other two “Dreadnought” carriages represent the pinnacle of the Metropolitan Railway’s coaching stock. In the late 19th century, the Metropolitan Railway pushed northwest from London towards Aylesbury and beyond. It eventually met up with the Manchester, Sheffield & Lincolnshire Railway (or Great Central Railway, as it was by then), itself pushing south.

Normal fares operate with standard discounts for local resident cardholders and members. If you live in Postcode areas BD20, BD21 or BD22, you can take advantage of special reduced fares by having a Local Residents Railcard. Find out more information about how to apply on the website.

The very nature of the vintage carriages fleet is that the coaches come from an age where access for disabled passengers was not a priority. Therefore, as the vehicles are restored to their original condition, those wishing to travel onboard our vintage train and have a disability may have difficulty boarding it.
In addition, those disabled passengers with wheelchairs or motorised ‘buggies’ should be aware that the nature of the coaches means there is nowhere to store either wheelchairs or ‘buggies’ on the train, except in the guard’s van. Please speak to a station staff member who may be able to assist.
The vintage coaches that make up the Vintage Train were built-in an age when children’s pushchairs and buggies were a thing of the future and, as the vehicles that make up the train are restored to their original condition, there is no provision, except in the guard’s van, on the train to store them whilst you enjoy your journey back in time. Please speak to a station staff member who may be able to assist.
Due to the age and delicate nature of the vintage carriages used on Vintage Train services, dogs are not able to travel in some carriages.
We recognise that these dogs provide valuable assistance for the sight-impaired and those with hearing loss, epilepsy, diabetes, physical mobility problems and more. Assistance Dogs are welcome on ALL KWVR trains, for which no charge is made.
