Honouring a Legacy: The Standard 4 Locomotive Preservation Society
After 53 proud years of preserving and caring for two historic steam locomotives, the Standard 4 Locomotive Preservation Society finds itself at a turning point. Thanks to recent support from the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway, both engines are currently in full working order, having undergone vital boiler and mechanical overhauls.
Yet, sustaining this level of preservation has become increasingly challenging for Society members, both financially and logistically. As a result, the heartfelt decision has been made to wind up the Society and gift the locomotives to the KWVR — the very Railway that has been their home since the 1970s.
This transition marks the end of an era, but also the beginning of a new chapter — one that ensures these treasured locomotives will continue to steam through the Worth Valley for generations to come.
Join us in celebrating the extraordinary efforts of the Society and the lasting legacy they leave behind.

Standard 4 Loco Preservation Society
The Society was formed in 1971 to preserve an ex British Railways ‘Standard’ steam locomotive from the famous Woodham Bros. Barry scrapyard in South Wales. The origins of the Society go back to 1969, and the intention of a small group to acquire Class 4MT 2-6-0 No. 76077, but in 1972 the newly formed Society purchased 4MT 4-6-0 No. 75078, which was in much better and more complete condition. On transfer to Haworth 75078, it became the 21st locomotive to leave the scrapyard.
