Standard 4 Loco Preservation Society

Honouring a Legacy: The Standard 4 Locomotive Preservation Society

After 53 proud years of preserving and caring for two historic steam locomotives, the Standard 4 Locomotive Preservation Society finds itself at a turning point. Thanks to recent support from the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway, both engines are currently in full working order, having undergone vital boiler and mechanical overhauls.

Yet, sustaining this level of preservation has become increasingly challenging for Society members, both financially and logistically. As a result, the heartfelt decision has been made to wind up the Society and gift the locomotives to the KWVR — the very Railway that has been their home since the 1970s.

This transition marks the end of an era, but also the beginning of a new chapter — one that ensures these treasured locomotives will continue to steam through the Worth Valley for generations to come.

Join us in celebrating the extraordinary efforts of the Society and the lasting legacy they leave behind.

DATE

Saturday 7th June

75078 & 78022 will haul the steam service double-headed.

Locomotives

75078 was built in Swindon in 1956 and spent its working life on the Southern Region of British Railways. It was taken out of service in 1966 at Eastleigh and finally sold for scrap. Restoration to full working order was completed by Society members in February 1977 and since then the locomotive has been in regular use on the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway.

78022 was built in Darlington in 1954 and was first allocated to the Eastern Region but subsequently transferred to the London Midland Region, from where it was withdrawn in 1967 from the Lostock Hall depot in Preston.

Encouraged by progress on 75078 a second Standard locomotive, 2MT 2-6-0 No. 78022 was acquired in 1975, also from Barry scrapyard, as a longer-term project. Again, the restoration was carried out by Society members at Haworth and was finally completed in October 1992. Like 75078, the locomotive has since operated regularly on KWVR services.

Standard 4 Loco Preservation Society

The Society was formed in 1971 to preserve an ex British Railways ‘Standard’ steam locomotive from the famous Woodham Bros. Barry scrapyard in South Wales. The origins of the Society go back to 1969, and the intention of a small group to acquire Class 4MT 2-6-0 No. 76077, but in 1972 the newly formed Society purchased 4MT 4-6-0 No. 75078, which was in much better and more complete condition. On transfer to Haworth 75078, it became the 21st locomotive to leave the scrapyard.

The Keighley & Worth Valley is unique because most of our trains convey a real-ale buffet car, serving real-ale from traditional hand pumps. The buffet car also serves tea, coffee and a wide selection of soft drinks & snacks – but it’s the real-ale that is the real treat for our passengers.

But how does a traditional beer barrel with sediment remain drinkable on a moving train? The beer is drawn from the cask before the journey into a specially made drum on the train, ensuring a perfect pint throughout the day. The Railway uses local breweries, and on selected weekends, there can be up to three real-ales on board – we usually try to have two at least!

OPENING TIMES

You can check on the timetable to see when the On-Train bar is conveyed by looking for the coffee cup symbol in the notes section.

Members & Local Resident Car holders can enjoy a discount on it too.
