The Keighley & Worth Valley Railway raises much of the finance to run and maintain the Railway – it locomotives, coaches, stations, track and infrastructure – through fares for travel on our trains and from special events.

Occasionally we experience the need for additional funds to be able to undertake special projects or costly repairs and maintenance. Regular visitors to the Railway will recall the appeal to raise sufficient money for our flagship locomotive – ‘Ivatt’ 2-6-2T no. 41241 – to be restored for our 50th Anniversary celebrations in time to re-enact the opening day train, which had featured 41241 in 1968.

Much of our infrastructure is over 100 years old, 150 years old in parts, and the passage of time is taking its toll, much of it, therefore, is coming up for renewal. Some renewals can be undertaken at relatively low cost, but others will run into six figures, even with volunteer input.

And of course, as the world is witnessing, events take hold that cannot be covered by day-to-day operating revenue.

‘Worth Saving’ – the KWVR Support Appeal

2020 has been a challenging year so far. We’ve had to replace a 115 year old bridge at the cost of £150,000, have been hit by the worst flooding in years leaving us with a heavy repair bill, and now we are expecting further financial loss due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
