Spend a shift as a Steam Crane Driver

A unique experience in the UK

Ever wondered what it’s like to get hold of the controls of a powerful steam crane? On the KWVR Steam Crane Experience, you’ll get properly hands-on, driving and also slinging, finding out how goods and materials were moved around using steam power.

You’ll also get the opportunity to explore one of Britain’s most famous heritage lines. The railway runs through Haworth (Brontë Country) and Oakworth (The Railway Children) on the way to Keighley, where we connect with the national rail network.

What can you expect?

A friendly, informal Half Day with real railway work, under the supervision of our experienced husband & wife team, Keith & Margaret. You’ll be part of a small group, so there’s time in the thick of it (and time to take it all in).

You’ll get to!
  • Drive the steam crane, self-propelled and moving materials around Oakworth Yard (supervised)
  • Act as the Slinger – Learn how to correctly secure loads and give instructions to the driver for lifts.
  • Enjoy the other half day on the railway with your rover ticket.

To keep everyone safe and comfortable:

  • Age: 18–75 and in good health. If you’re over 75, we can accept you with a letter from your GP.
  • Footwear: Stout footwear required—boots (ideally steel-toe cap) or walking shoes. No trainers on the engine.
  • What we provide: A boiler suit and gloves..
  • Your Experience includes: A voucher for a breakfast or main meal at the Old Parcels Office in Keighley. This can be redeemed either before or after your experience.
  • Guests: Bring up to one guest free of charge – this includes a rover ticket only for the guest.

What Does It Involve?

  • Meet your host at the appointed time, get kitted out with your PPE, and enjoy a tea/coffee while we run through an essential safety briefing and how the crane and yard operate.
  • With our team alongside you, each participant will rotate through Driver and Slinger roles for the duration of the experience.
  • Assist with preparation (AM sessions) or disposal of the crane (PM sessions), and gain knowledge of the working parts and how they function
  • Plenty of photo opportunities throughout the day

The Steam Crane Experience offers an amazing and unique opportunity and includes:

  • A half day as a Crane driver and Slinger
  • One year’s membership of the KWVRPS, including the quarterly magazine Push and Pull
  • Three free travel days and the chance to get involved as an active member in the railway’s workings
  • A Breakfast or main meal for the participant.
