LMS ‘Jubilee’ Class locomotive 45596 ‘Bahamas, was the first of the four Jubilees of the class to be preserved and occupies a special place in railway history as it was the very last steam engine to be modified by BR in its attempts to improve the performance of its steam fleet with the fitting of its unique double chimney and blastpipe in 1961. The Bahamas Locomotive Society (BLS) bought 45596 in 1967.
‘Bahamas’ ran on the main line (1989 – 1994) before retiring to Oxenhope Exhibition Shed in 1997. 45596 moved to Tyseley Locomotive Works in November 2013 as a result of the BLS’s successful £996k bid to the Heritage Lottery Fund for help to give it the most extensive overhaul since 1961. 45596’s first steaming after its latest overhaul was on 27 September and, on its return to Ingrow, ‘Bahamas’ is about to operate on the main line once again.
The Keighley & Worth Valley Railway will be running a railtour from Oxenhope to Carlisle and return using the recently beautifully restored ‘Bahamas’, with kind support of Bahamas Locomotive Society.

Due to operational restrictions, the return journey from Carlisle will terminate at Keighley. A connecting steam hauled service from Keighley will return customers to Haworth and Oxenhope.
Our special train will depart Oxenhope, terminus of the KWVR, at 08.15 stopping to collect passengers at Haworth and Keighley on the KWVR and Skipton. On leaving Skipton the train heads to Hellifield and onto Settle Junction where the climb over the famous Settle & Carlisle Railway begins. The Settle & Carlisle Line, one of the most spectacular and best loved stretches of railway line in Britain boasts the highest railway summit in England at Ais Gill, 1,169 feet above sea level. We pass over numerous viaducts, including the most famous of them all, Ribblehead, and plunge into tunnels on our climb to the summit and descent towards our destination. There are magnificent views across the north Pennines and to the peaks of Pen-y-ghent to the east, Ingleborough and Whernside to the west.
We stay in the border city of Carlisle for approximately two and half hours, providing time to visit the castle, cathedral, museum and shops, or spend your time at leisure in one of the coffee shops, restaurants or bars that are aplenty in the city centre.

The Society was formed in 1967 with the aim of purchasing and maintaining in working order the former LMS Railway ‘Jubilee’ class steam locomotive No. 45596 ‘Bahamas’ and have been the proud custodians of the locomotive for the last 51 years.

The Society was formed in 1967 with the aim of purchasing and maintaining in working order the former LMS Railway ‘Jubilee’ class steam locomotive No. 45596 ‘Bahamas’ and became proud owners of the locomotive following its withdrawal from service at Stockport Edgeley Motive Power Depot.
It has been 25 years since Bahamas was last seen and heard on the Settle & Carlisle Railway where the last remaining ‘Jubilee’ engines saw out their final days. Although No. 45596’s distinctive ‘roar’ could not be heard regularly over the Northern Fells during the engine’s latter-day BR service (45596 was withdrawn in July 1966) this all changed once it was preserved in 1967 when, after just three trips to Hereford and Sheffield in 1972/73 in red LMS livery as 5596, Bahamas put in some outstanding performances over the S&C between 1989 and 1994 once again resplendent in BR green livery.
Initially a working museum was established at the Dinting Railway Centre in Derbyshire and the locomotive was given its first overhaul in preservation by the Hunslet Engine Company in Leeds which completed in March 1968. During this first overhaul it was repainted in LMS crimson lake livery and numbered 5596. In this guise ‘Bahamas’ was selected by BR to be one of the few locomotives chosen to haul a series of embryonic ‘Return to Steam’ excursions, the forerunner of the steam excursions we see today.
On withdrawal, the Society members completed a second overhaul during August 1988 but this time restored it authentically in British Railways Brunswick Green livery with its BR number, 45596.
Following closure of the Dinting site, BLS moved to Ingow on the KWVR in 1991, refurbishing the Midland Railway goods shed as an exhibition centre and workshop. In 1994 ‘Bahamas’ mainline certification expired and after operating on the KWVR and other preserved lines, retired to Oxenhope Shed in 1997. After 15 years in store ‘Bahamas’ left Oxenhope in May 2012 for display at the NRM before leaving for Tyseley Locomotive Works in Birmingham in 2013 for its latest return to mainline service.
Commenting about 45596’s first trip, BLS Chairman Keith Whitmore said ‘We have waited for 25 years to see Bahamas back on the main line and we are absolutely delighted that for our first trip we will be working with our friends and partners at KWVR. It is so appropriate that not only are we steaming from the railway where we are based but that we are also travelling between Settle and Carlisle where so many enthusiasts and families loved to see our popular loco perform to perfection”
