Diesel & Mixed Traffic Gala

The Diesel & Mixed Traffic Gala encompasses 2 different eras providing a look back for those who do not remember steam traction, for whom this Diesel Gala brings back memories of the heritage machines that worked from the end of steam, right up until recent memory, and also gives 2 days of steam hauled trains, reminiscent of a time when diesels and steam worked side by side on the national network.

The diesels are returning…

The Event will take a different format to usual with the first two days seeing all services hauled by home and visiting Diesel Locomotives, many from around the country.

Many visitors won’t remember steam traction, so the Diesel Gala brings back memories of these heritage machines that worked right from the end of steam right up until recent memory – and in some cases continue to do so!

On the Sunday & Monday of our Event, our home fleet of Steam Locomotives will then come out to play for a mixed traffic theme.

As part of the intensive timetable, evening trains are planned to be running. This will include plenty of Express and Shuttle trains as well as special late night trains running on Saturday night.

Each of our main sets will include a Real Ale bar serving a selection of Real Ale from local breweries, with hot and cold drinks also being served for you to enjoy during your journey with us.

With discussion among various groups and the gala planning team taking place, we’re aiming to bring something for everyone!

GB Railfreight

GB Railfreight have advised us that unfortunately, due to engineering work and traffic requirements, they can no longer commit to sending 2 x class 73 locomotives to our Gala and can only apologise for any disappointment that it will cause.

Thankfully, in place of this, GBRF are sending one of their Class 47 locomotives, recently re liveried and returned to use with the Company!

Direct Rail Services

Direct Rail Services (DRS) will again support our Event and are sending a locomotive to attend the event. We have requested either a class 68 or class 88 to attend with the locomotive arriving and departing via our mainline connection. DRS have now confirmed that this will now be a Class 88, one of the most modern locomotives on the national network.

Class 88

The Class 88 locomotives are electro-diesel locomotives, capable of operating either on overhead power lines or by using an onboard diesel engine. Direct Rail Services procured the Class 88s to serve as a mixed-traffic locomotives, capable of operating both passenger and freight services. Primarily they are used to enable DRS to haul freight using electric locomotives without the need to hire in electric traction from other operators.

Prototype HST Locomotive, 41001

We are delighted to announce, with thanks to the National Railway Museum and 125 Group, that the unique Prototype HST locomotive, 41001, will headline our event! In addition, 41001 will haul a prototypical MK3 train, bringing 5 coaches with her. We are especially excited to introduce this visiting engine to the Diesel & Mixed Traffic Gala as it is the only one of its kind in the world and is famous for smashing the UK rail and world diesel speed record in 1973 at 143.2mph. The engine was developed to have faster acceleration and cruising speed with its aerodynamic front and was one of the most innovative creations of its time.

English Electric Class 50 locomotives, no.’s 50 031 and 50 049

These two locomotives are visiting the KWVR thanks to The Class 50 Alliance Ltd, the group owning or custodians of six Class 50 diesel electric locomotives (007, 031, 033, 035, 044, 049). Following on from the visit of 50 035 in Summer 2018 during our 50th Anniversary celebrations, 50 031 ‘Hood’ and 50 049 ‘Defiance’ (now in a striking GBRailfreight livery) will visit us for the Gala. Being mainline certified, ‘Defiance’ will provide the traction for the convoy of locomotives and coaches planned to attend the event.

Class 31, 97 205 (31 163) will follow hot on the heels of the Prototype HST at our Diesel & Mixed Traffic Gala!

To make this event all the more special we will be joined by Class 31, 97205, which will be wearing a unique British Railways Research livery from a very similar era to that of 41001. Our thanks go to the Chinnor and Princes Risborough Railway for allowing the loco to attend.

As we get closer to the event, a full list of Diesels and Steam Locomotives that will run during our Mixed Traffic days will be announced via our social media channels.

Fares

For the Diesel & Mixed Traffic Gala you can buy a Day Rover for 1, 2 and 3 days or for the full 4 day Gala. You can now buy online ahead the Gala and save 10% on the on-the-day price. To book you advance ticket.

For visitors to the Gala arriving after 15.00 can buy a Day Rover for the reduced price of £15 BUT please note this is not available to buy in advance and is only available for the day of purchase.

Adult = All passengers aged 16 years of over, unless considered a concession (see below).
Concession = Persons aged 65 years or over, Students with NUS Card, Holders of English National Bus Pass. You will need to show your ID or card to prove entitlement when collecting your tickets.
Child = Children aged 5 to 15 years of age inclusive.
Children under 5, travel free of charge

Trade Stands

During the event we will have a selection of trade stalls operating over the weekend and are as follow:

Bufferbeam – The Bufferbeam team will be joining us from Friday 3rd to Sunday 5th of May. They will be based at Oxenhope Platform selling a range of Railway Memorabilia ranging from Polo-shirts to Mugs.

GDMK Images – The GDMK team will be joining us from Friday 3rd to Monday 6th of May, they will be located at Ingrow-West and will have a range of railway art and pictures on canvas. They also sell a range of key rings, coasters, mugs and more as well as a full range of printed and embroidered clothing.

Resin Replicas – The team at Resin replicas will joining us from Saturday 4th to Sunday 6th of May, They will be located at Ingrow-West and will have a wide range of diesel & steam nameplates for sale which are made out of polyester resin meaning these can be displayed in your garden all year round.

The Class 37 Locomotive Group  – The team at C37LG will join us on Saturday 5th of May, they will be located at Keighley and will have a range railwayana from pens and books to DVDs and models.

Class 50 Alliance Ltd –  As well as attending with 2 class 50 locomotives the Class 50AL team will be joining us from Friday 3rd to Monday 6th of May with a stand selling a range of railway memorabilia with all funds going towards the up keep of their fleet of Class 50 locomotives.

125 Group – As well as attending with the Prototype HST the 125 group will be joining us from Friday 3rd to Monday 6th of May with a stand on-board the coaches behind the Prototype selling a range of HST themed railwayana from mugs to hats.

Food

As well as the normal railway catering in Oxenhope & Keighley Buffet we will also have Hayes Catering joining us for the whole weekend with a Lincolnshire sausage stand at Keighley and a delicious burger van at Ingrow-West Station so you’ll have plenty of choice when it comes to dinner time.

High Speed Train Pullman Dining Experience
