Summer Employment 2018

Summer Employment Applications are now open!

Every year the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway operate an intensive daily passenger service throughout the Summer months. As this requires a significant number of staff our regular band of volunteers cannot cover all the roles and consequently there will be a number of opportunities for Temporary Summer Employment throughout this period.

APPLICATIONS FOR 2018 ARE NOW OPEN

The Keighley and Worth Valley Railway will be operating an intensive passenger service daily between Monday 28th May and Friday 7th September 2018. This requires a significant number of staff and consequently there will be a number of opportunities for Temporary Summer Employment throughout this period. Applicants must be available for all or most of this period.

Duties this year are split into three categories, and you should make clear on your application form which of these roles you are applying for.

Please note that you may apply for ONE role only.

 Stations Department (x 14 posts)

Duties will include, but are not limited to, Station Foremen*, Crossing Keepers*, Booking Office, On-Train Ticket Examiner (TTC), Sales, on-train bars, and Bus Conductor. Applicants are expected to work in a variety of these duties, and those appointed will be rostered as such, which will be allocated by the Railway on a weekly basis to fill posts not being undertaken by volunteers. Further details on the specific responsibilities of each individual role are available upon request.

*Safety Critical role. Offer of employment subject to satisfactory medical.

This year, we have two separate vacancies within the Stations Department, both covering the roles outlined above.

1. Monday – Friday (8 x Full Time, 2 x zero hours)

Working Monday to Friday, this role covers all of the duties outlined above. Hours for the 8 full time staff are expected to be around 30-40 per week averaged over the course of the employment period depending on duty and location (note that the shift lengths increase half way through the employment period when our peak timetabled service starts).

2. Saturday & Sunday (2 x Part Time, 2 x zero hours)

Working each Saturday and Sunday during the employment period, this role covers all of the duties outlined above. Hours for the 2 part time staff are expected to be an average of 20 per week, depending on duty and location.

Commercial Department (x 6 posts zero hours)

Duties will include, but are not limited to, working in our main catering venues, Oxenhope Buffet and Keighley Buffet/shop, providing high standards of customer service at all times. We will also be providing a first class on board cream tea service during the summer and applicants in the Commercial Department will be expected to work as an on-board steward also. Further details on the specific responsibilities of each individual role are available on request. Successful applicants will be expected to work a mixture of midweek and weekends as per the needs of the business.

Carriage Cleaner (x 2 posts zero hours)

Commencing at 16:00 each weekday, our carriage cleaners provide the highest standard of presentation for our train carriages before they enter service for the day. Our 7 day a week business requires a small, but dedicated team of Carriage Cleaners to ensure our high standards are maintained both internally and externally. Work will be between 16:00 and 21:00 Monday to Friday.

Training

You must be trained in advance, so preference will be given, in the first instance, to existing working members who already have the required skills. However, if you are not already trained, you must be available for training which will be arranged after the selection process and must be completed prior to your contract start date.

Rates of Pay

Aged 16 – 20: £6.00*

Aged 21 – 24: £7.38

25 & over: £7.83 (Government Living Wage)

Some applicants will be required to undertake a standard KWVR medical assessment which may include both written assessments and physical tests. Appointments made within the Stations Department will be subject to satisfactory medical results.

*Expected rate – currently under negotiation.

Accommodation

Free overnight accommodation at Haworth may be arranged if required*. Applicants may be rostered to work at any KWVR station, so applicants will need to ensure they can travel as required between home and the station (for which travel expenses will not be paid).
*Subject to availability
