Every September the Railway is closed for 2 weeks for our Civil Maintenance Department to undertake work that requires complete closure of the Railway. This year Civil Week will be over the weekend of 16th and 17th September.
These works have included major bridge renewal and, last year, renewal of Oakworth Level Crossing, both large civil engineering work that cannot be undertaken over a few days and when trains are running. This year the team will be tackling Oakworth Yard turnout (the points that lead into Oakworth yard) and Bridge 17 (the first bridge south of Oakworth Level Crossing). It is also hoped that they can install the new level crossing gate at Oakworth.
The Railway plays host to many volunteers, many of whom set aside holiday from work, specifically to help with these large tasks.
As a result, once again the line will be severed between Haworth and Oakworth, so the Railway is introducing a special timetable utilising 3 modes of transport - steam, bus and diesel:
- steam hauled services between Oxenhope and Haworth, akin to winter services that operated almost 50 years ago in the early years of the KWVR
- linking bus service between Haworth and Ingrow
- diesel railcar service between Oakworth and Keighley, which will link into the railcar service for onward (and return) travel to Keighley
